“I remember when I was in college, my mother gave me a Chinese palm. She said, ‘If you can continue to grow, it shows you are responsible. ‘ . Since then, I’ve always loved taking care of [ and owning ] plants. As a person with seasonal influences-especially when I moved to Chicago in 2013-i was very conscious of making sure that my space was designed to be as peaceful and pleasant as possible, which for me meant having plants and always trying to have a fresh flower in my space. Even when I began my separation between Ghana and the United States, I made sure that no matter what house I lived in, I would buy new plants.

“Right now, I have about 15 plants in my space, and for me, having and taking care of plants is a bit like how I communicate with others, especially when it comes to work and my team, and reminding me how to take care of myself. No plants are the same. Even if they come from the same family, some plants need more water than others. Sometimes they just need to sit in the sun, but some plants don’t need much.

“When I lived in New York City, I didn’t really like plants. But then I moved to Jackson Hole Airport, Wyoming — a natural botanical paradise — and they became my life. I was immediately serene and comforted by the lush forests and blooming meadows, which were filled with colorful wildflowers and wild native plants like borage, sage and chamomile. I was struck by their ability to survive in the harsh mountain climate without any help. It made me wonder if these wild plants could use the same“Fight/survive mechanism” to help treat problematic skin. My hunch was right-wild plants nourish, hydrate and protect-so I created Alpyn Beauty to inject these hand-picked wild plants into skin-care formulas. Between July and September, you can see my“Wild craft,” the sustainable harvesting of wild plants from their natural habitat. Sustainability is a priority for the brand, and 1% of every product purchased by Alpyn Beauty goes directly to the restoration of national parks. So far, our donations have helped restore more than 1,000 acres of seabuckthorn grassland in Grand Teton National Park. This grassland is vital not only for the survival of wild plants, but also for the survival of wild animals.”

“My favourite plants have to be vines. It brought a lot into my life because my husband Joseph Louis François Bertrand and I built a skin care company around it. I like to call it an absolute plant. Its juice produces the most powerful anti-black spot molecule (Vinif érine) , the gold standard anti-aging resveratrol, and the powerful antioxidant (polyphenol) in seeds. Grapes are part of the family history because my parents were winemakers at Smith Lafayette.

“I was born and raised in nature. With Henri Gatien Bertrand, we are very outdoor people. We love trees and believe they are the best natural climate solution. They take carbon out of the air and lock it up, contributing to population health, protecting biodiversity, improving water quality and controlling soil erosion. In 2012, when we were living in New York, we spoke with Yvon Chouinard, founder of One Percent for the Planet, and decided to spend 1 Percent of CAUDALIE’s sales each year on tree planting. We planted 10 million trees in 10 different countries in 10 years. Caudalie is the first cosmetic contributor to the One Percent Earth project and may compensate for its four-fold carbon footprint.

“Growing up in the idyllic Austrian Alps, I was steeped in an understanding of local traditions and the beauty and health benefits of the region’s abundant vegetation. I received for the first time the beauty and healing powers of the local herbs and plants offered by my dear grandmother-we made healing tonics and calendula creams. This is where my passion and curiosity for natural healing ingredients and powerful formulas came into being. To this day, nature is my biggest source of inspiration. Many of our active ingredients come from the rich environment around us, in the Alps of Austria and Switzerland. We use powerful plants such as arnica, chamomile, marigold, lavender and rosemary. The natural twigs found in our essential oil baths and indoor diffusers are hand-picked from the Austrian mountains and surrounding areas, which not only tells a beautiful story about nature here, but also helps reduce our carbon emissions, leaving a light footprint on our planet. I’ve always been an advocate of sustainability. Local raw materials, environmentally friendly production, sustainable packaging innovation, manufacturing processes and a deep respect for nature and human beings. That’s always been our philosophy. It’s always about the whole picture.
